Composition in Blue Red Yellow Orange and Black #1

Composition in Blue Red Yellow Orange and Black #1 por David Lewis-Baker.
This abstract minimalist piece is designed as a large wall hanging or mural. It is inspired by Native American textiles and wall hangings I saw in Arizona in the 1970s and ’80s and also by the colours of the Arizonan and New Mexican deserts – in this case at sundown. Rothko is also an influence in such works as is Mondrian.

The black framing area has been reduced on this piece. Thanks to Arild Storaas for advice on this.

Nice Hotel Wall – Recomposition #4

Nice Hotel Wall – Recomposition #4

One of a series of pure digital abstracts created from photographs of the patterns and lines drawn by the afternoon Riviera sunlight on the window sill and walls of my hotel bedroom in Nice.

There is, in my view, a very thin line between abstraction and representation in the sense that all representational images are also abstract if broken into their component parts by close examination, or by merging into distant panoramas. Likewise, purely abstract images can generate patterns which appear to be representational of objects, forms etc. In this composition I have taken images which retain vestiges of the original objects from which they were drawn – walls, windows, shadows etc and crossed the line with them into formal abstraction through major compositional, tonal etc alterations.

There are also Rothko-like elements to this piece.
